Sinfonia Varsovia\u2019s March calendar promises to be quite impressive. This is the month the Orchestra celebrates its 35th<\/sup> birthday with a festive concert featuring no fewer than three excellent conductors. The last concert of the first edition of the \u201cResounds. New Polish Music\u201d series takes place some days later. The Orchestra will also perform twice at the Festival Printemps des Arts in Monte-Carlo and the string quartet made up of the Orchestra\u2019s concert masters and section leaders will be showcased in the Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music cycle in March.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year marks exactly 35 years <\/strong>since Yehudi Menuhin\u2019s first visit in Poland that led to the formation of Sinfonia Varsovia. On this occasion, please join the Orchestra on 23 March at 6:00 p.m. in Teatr Wielki \u2013 the National Opera<\/strong> in a festive Birthday Concert <\/a><\/strong>during which no fewer than three conductors will stand on the podium. The concert will begin under the direction of French conductor Herv\u00e9 Niquet<\/strong>, who will conduct Krzysztof Penderecki\u2019s Sinfonietta per archi<\/strong>, which the composer dedicated to the Orchestra, overture to Gioacchino Rossini\u2019s L\u2019Italiana in Algeri <\/strong>and Paul Dukas<\/strong>\u2019 symphonic poem T<\/em>he Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice<\/strong>. After the intermission the Orchestra will perform the 2nd<\/sup> Essay for Orchestra Op. 17 <\/strong>by Samuel Barber<\/strong> and Symphonic Dances <\/strong>from Leonard Bernstein\u2019s <\/strong>musical West Side Story<\/strong>. These works will be conducted by young American conductor Roderick Cox<\/strong>, last year\u2019s laureate of the prestigious Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award. The last two works in the evening\u2019s programme \u2013 Prokofiev\u2019s Symphony No. 1 Op. 25 in D major <\/strong><\/em>\u201cClassical<\/strong>\u201d and Wojciech Kilar\u2019s Krzesany <\/strong>will be conducted by Marzena Diakun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sinfonia Varsovia\u2019s extraordinary, colourful history will be recounted by persons who have very close ties with the Orchestra \u2013 Waldemar D\u0105browski<\/strong>, director of Teatr Wielki \u2013 the National Opera \u2013 it was he who invited Yehudi Menuhin to Poland for the first time and Janusz Marynowski<\/strong>, the Orchestra\u2019s long-term double bassist and director of the Orchestra for the past 15 years. The last concert of the first edition of the \u201cResounds. New Polish Music<\/strong><\/a>\u201d cycle takes place only a few days later, on 29 March at 7:00 p.m.<\/strong> Featured in the encounter with contemporary Polish music will be Pawe\u0142 Mykietyn<\/strong> and Aleksander Ko\u015bci\u00f3w<\/strong>. Conducted by Bassem Akiki<\/strong>, Sinfonia Varsovia will play first performances of the composers\u2019 latest concertos for solo instrument and orchestra. Commissioned by Sinfonia Varsovia, Pawe\u0142 Mykietyn composed his Concerto No. 2 for Cello and Symphony Orchestra<\/strong>, entrusting the performance of the solo part to one of Poland\u2019s most valued cellists \u2013 Marcin Zdunik<\/strong>. Aleksander Ko\u015bci\u00f3w invited Klaudiusz Baran<\/strong>, excellent accordion player and rector of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw to be the soloist in his Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra<\/strong>. As in other concerts in the \u201cResounds. New Polish Music\u201d cycle, brand new compositions are performed hand in hand with works written in the 20th<\/sup> century to show music written today in a wider context. The last work to be performed will be the suite from the ballet Firebird,<\/strong> written by Igor Stravinsky<\/strong>, one of the most influential composers of the 20th<\/sup> century. The cycle traditionally features meetings with composers <\/strong>one hour before the beginning of the concert. In March, in the foyer of the Witold Lutos\u0142awski Concert Studio of Polish Radio Jan Topolski <\/strong>will host a discussion with Pawe\u0142 Mykietyn and Aleksander Ko\u015bci\u00f3w.

In mid-March Sinfonia Varsovia travels to Monaco<\/strong>, where it will perform on 15 and 16 March<\/strong> at the Festival Printemps des Arts in Monte-Carlo<\/a><\/strong>, playing all five of Ludwig van Beethoven\u2019s Piano Concertos<\/strong>. The Orchestra will be conducted from the piano by French conductor and pianist Fran\u00e7ois-Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Guy<\/strong>. Beethoven\u2019s concertos will be played along with works composed by Mauricio Kagel, Argentine-German composer, one of the most original artists of the 20th<\/sup> century, who combined instrumental music with the world of theatre. His Rrrrrr<\/strong>\u2026, 6 pi\u00e8ces pour 2 percussionnistes<\/strong> and Con voce, pour 3 interpr\u00e8tes muets et instruments ad libitum <\/strong>will be performed by Maroussia Gentet <\/strong>(piano), Jean-\u00c9tienne Sotty <\/strong>(accordion) and Jean-Baptiste Bonnard<\/strong> & Ad\u00e9la\u00efde Ferri\u00e8re<\/strong> (percussion instruments).<\/p>\n

The Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music<\/strong><\/a> series in March features what is probably the most popular type of ensemble in the genre \u2013 the string quartet. On 6 March at 7:00 p.m. in Sinfonia Varsovia\u2019s home<\/strong> we will have an opportunity to listen to a quartet made up of the Orchestra\u2019s concert masters and section leaders performing Dmitri Shostakovich\u2019s String Quartet No. 5 in B-flat major Op. 92 <\/strong>and traditional Scandinavian music<\/strong> arranged by the Danish String Quartet<\/strong> and recorded on the album Wood Works<\/strong>. The same concert will be repeated one day later, on 7 March at 5:00 p.m. in the Marki Centre of Culture <\/strong><\/a>in the town of Marki. Admission to the concert in Sinfonia Varsovia\u2019s home is free. There are also events in March for our youngest listeners. \u201cThe Butterfly & the Flower<\/strong>\u201d is the theme of Smykofonia<\/strong> <\/a>[Toddler Philharmonic<\/strong>] concerts at Grochowska Street on 16 & 17 March<\/strong>, featuring music by French Impressionists for cello, clarinet, piano and soprano. Also in March, there will be an opportunity to see an exhibition of works created by<\/strong> Pawe\u0142 Nocu\u0144.<\/strong> Titled \u201cCanoe Path\u201d, his cycle of paintings will be available for viewing in the Palace building at 272 Grochowska Street from 15 to 31 March<\/strong>.
