No fewer than 25 Grammy Award nominations – four of which resulted in wins! – and three Emmy Awards. No other big band leader has been so highly acclaimed in the 21st century, except for saxophonist, pianist, conductor, and arranger Gordon Goodwin, who passed away last December. With The Big Phat Band, an 18-piece orchestra he founded in 1999, he played music that blended the jazz of the 1920s and 1930s with newer styles. Fascinated by Count Basie, he reportedly wrote his first song, Hang Loose, at the age of thirteen. He built his reputation both through his own compositions and his arrangements of jazz standards (such as Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man), musical theater, and film scores (such as Alan Menken’s unforgettable song Tale as Old as Time from the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast, originally performed by Céline Dion and Peabo Bryson). He is the composer of such songs as Hunting Wabbits and Hit the Ground Running (both nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Instrumental Composition” category) as well as film scores, such as the music for Pixar’s animated film The Incredibles. Gordon Goodwin performed at La Folle Journée several years ago, and this time Wojciech Łuczniewski, Chopin University Big Band, and Chopin University Batucada will play for him – as a farewell.
