Katarzyna Drzewiecka Acting Associate Principal

Cello in Sinfonia Varsovia since 2003

Born in Bydgoszcz in a family with musical traditions. She has completed her studies in the cello class of Professor Kazimierz Michalik and Professor Stanisław Firlej at the Academy of Music in Warsaw.

She took part in domestic and international cello competitions. She has refined her skills in master classes in Poland and abroad with such teachers as Maria Czajkowska, Mikhail Chomitzer, Milos Sadlo, Michael Flaksman and Daniel Szafran.

Drzewiecka performs as soloist and in chamber ensembles. In 1997 she performed the Polish premiere of Richard Cornell’s Ningaloo together with the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also recorded for Polish Television.

Drzewiecka is a member of the Warsaw Consonare per Varsavia trio and has held the soloist position in the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra since the 2003.

She has performed many times as soloist alongside Nigel Kennedy during European concert tours of the Polish Chamber Orchestra.

Prizes and Awards

  • 1st prize and special prize for the best performance of Kazimierz Wiłkomirski’s Symphonie Concertante at the National Cello Competition in Poznań (1987)
  • special prize donated by Professor Kaja Danczowska at the National Cello Competition in Poznań (1987)
  • special distinction at the Johannes Brahms International Competition in Hamburg (1990)
