Sinfonia Varsovia’s wind instrument section is currently recording a “fairytale” program including the works of Humperdinck, Musorgski, and Franck. The audience will have the opportunity to listen to it live during the concert on August 19th. The presented pieces, inspired by the Russian folklore and German fairytales, represent the quintessence of the romantic horror. To ease the viewers into this fantastical world, the evening will start with the overture to Humperdinck’s opera, and later culminate with Musorgski’s popular fantasy, Night on Bald Mountain. The audience will also be in for a special treat – César Franck’s symphonic poem about a cursed hunter based on Gottfried August Bürger’s ballad. Rarely performed, the work brings to mind both the works of Liszt and Berlioz’s Fantastical Symphony. The piece also exposes Franck as more than a distinguished “professor of organ”, which is how the French composer is often remembered today.
