We’ll be dancing to everything from Polish funk to Brazilian disco – in DJ sets mixed straight from original 7-inch vinyl singles. Funk, soul and disco are African-American musical genres that emerged in the United States during the 1960s and ’70s. Soul is the secular version of gospel – a deeply emotional style in which love becomes almost a religious experience. Funk is pure rhythm – blending the spontaneity of jazz with the emotional force of soul and blues. It’s music made for dancing. Disco, meanwhile, was the first truly club-oriented genre – created for communal joy on the dancefloor, where style mattered just as much as sound. Locking is a dance style born in Los Angeles in the late ’60s and early ’70s – full of freedom, flair and sheer exuberance. The names of the steps say it all: Funky Chicken, Scooby Doo, Funky Penguin, Muscle Man. Created by young African Americans on the streets of California, locking expressed a sense of positivity that was often hard to come by. It was a way to stand out from the crowd – but above all, it guaranteed a good time. Today, it’s part of global hip-hop culture and can be spotted in iconic music videos by artists from Michael Jackson to Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. One thing’s for sure – a properly funky night awaits, and that means not only sore legs, but aching cheeks… from all the smiling!
